“Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine” is among the oldest healing practices in the world, and it originated in Asian countries more than 5.000 years ago as part of a ‘Traditional, Whole and Holistic medical system’ that regards the Rhythms and the Laws of Nature to maintain the balance of the Human Being in the universe in which it exists.

It is based on the concept that disease results from disruption in the flow of Qi and imbalance in the forces of Yin and Yang. Practices such as the use of Medicinal Herbs, Moxibustion, Meditation and Breathing techniques, Qi-gong (cultivation of Inner Vitality), Medical massage and manipulation, and Acupuncture, seek to aid healing by restoring the yin-yang balance and the flow of Qi (And this system is often referred to as TCM-Traditional Chinese Medicine, even though many other countries have offered great contributions to this holistic medicine system, like Japan and Korea.

Most patients do not even feel the tip of the minute needles touching their skin, because these points are highly charged energetically and sometimes are so deficient that the body is asking for them to be stimulated. In some cases patients may only feel a light sensation of a small pinch, followed by comfortable warmth or distending feeling. Relief or improvement of symptoms, increased oxygenation to the brain, increased circulation and increased energy occur within 48 hours after treatment. Needles are left in for approximately 20-30 minutes.

Eastern medicine protects and preserves health, prevents disease and anticipates possible states of degeneration and illness, helps keep emotional, mental and physical balance, and renews our resources, vitality and essence.

Western medicine treats after a crisis has developed. Although, heroic rescues are attempted, using pharmaceuticals, invasive procedures and surgeries often adds to the impairment and progressive dysfunction of the body.

An informed and successful patient is a patient who decides for the best, most conservative and proper care that is not going to cause any more detriment to their health or worsening in their condition.

In most cases, through the use of Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture, patients may finally receive the relief and the benefits they have long been looking for and were not able to achieve with Allopathic (Western) medical procedures, surgeries and pharmaceuticals.

Some Acute and Chronic diseases or complains may benefit from an interaction between both Western and Eastern medicine. The two are not substitutes for each other, but may complement each other.

Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture are used as a “Primary and/or Complementary Health approaches” to promote wellness, recover health and increase harmony at all levels. Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture could work concomitantly with Western Medicine treatments to get you the best possible care and outcome. It will be an honor for us at Health & Hope Institute to communicate and work directly with your treating Western Physician to accommodate the best plan of care for your needs. As the Eastern and Western traditions meet and complement each other, harmony and health may be swiftly restored.

The effects of acupuncture are:

  1. Alters and benefits the state of the mind and the emotions.
  2. Remedies ailments, heals disease and diminishes pain.
  3. Enhances recovery, immunity, and functional activity for restoration of work capabilities.

Toyohari Japanese Gentle Acupuncture

Toyohari is a form of traditional East Asian medicine. It is a refined system of Japanese meridian therapy. It is different from most other forms of acupuncture in that it uses more delicate (mainly non-inserted) and specialized treatment methods, placing great emphasis on the use of pulse diagnosis and palpation skills. Its theoretical foundation is derived from the medical classics: Nei Jing, Su Wen, Ling Shu and primarily the Nan Jing.

The Toyohari Association has developed quite unique training and teaching methods that can accelerate the learning of skills that usually take many years of practice to develop.

The Toyohari Association was founded by blind acupuncturists in 1959 in Japan, evolving out of earlier developments in meridian therapy in the 1930s and 1940s. Today it includes both sighted and blind practitioners. Toyohari is offered as a post-graduate training program in Japan, North America, Europe and Australasia. The curriculum is highly organized with an emphasis on hands-on clinical training and Kozato method study practice involving feedback to enhance skills.

Graduates of the Toyohari curriculums are highly skilled in their pulse reading, tactile diagnostic and assessment skills, develop a greater sense of Qi sensitivity and learn a range of Non-stimulation methods specifically aimed at harmonizing and regulating the distribution of Qi (Vitality), enhancing the constitutional well-being of patients as well as relieving symptoms.

Toyohari is a powerful therapeutic system for both preventing disease and maintaining health.

If you usually become anxious with regular Acupuncture procedures or just by the thought of using needles, please let us know so that we can provide you with this very gentle, relaxing, invigorating and healing form of treatment.

Shonishin Pediatric Acupuncture

Shonishin (Sho=little, Ni=children, Shin=needle) is a specialized form of treatment for infants and children that became renowned in the 1700s in the Osaka region of Japan. To this day, Japanese parents regularly bring children for shonishin treatment, and the shonishin approach is increasing in popularity around the world.

Children’s bio-energeticsystems are not fully formed and, being at the most “yang” phase of their existence, their energy (Qi) moves extremely rapidly. Consequently, children’s systems can be easily over stimulated, and health problems can progress rapidly.

Shonishin focuses on gentle, specialized, 95% Non-Inserted treatment techniques that children find comfortable and even pleasurable. Dramatic results can be obtained even with very light treatment.

The ancient classics of China, such as the Ling Shu, describe nine types of needles, several of which were clearly never intended to pierce the skin. Three of these non-inserted needles —the Enshin, the Teishin, and the Zanshin — are considered basic to the practice of Shonishin pediatric acupuncture. Over the years, many additional tools and supplementary techniques have been designed specifically for pediatric therapy. Treatments are delivered in a warm and safe atmosphere and ‘little patients’ come to play and rest while getting healthier at the same time.

Shonishin techniques involve rhythmic stroking, rubbing, tapping, and pressing the skin to give different kinds of gentle stimulation. These techniques regulate and fortify children’s vital energy, harmonize their emotional systems, and strengthen their constitution and immune system.

Shonishin is used to treat a wide variety of problems, including:

  • Failure to thrive syndrome
  • Weak constitution
  • Colic, excessive night crying, temper tantrums
  • Indigestion, GERD, constipation, and diarrhea
  • Night terrors
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Allergies, asthma, and colds
  • Eczema and hives
  • Ear infections
  • Bedwetting
  • Stuttering
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Spina bifida

The specifics of the treatment (frequency, dosage, strength) depend on the practitioner, the age, and condition of the child, among other factors. Treatments for children are actually very brief: a typical treatment generally lasts only one to five minutes. Generally speaking, the older the child, the longer the treatment. It’s particularly important that the practitioner develops a touch (and a heart) that a child responds to!

The key to successful Shonishin treatment is “less is better.” The beauty of Shonishin is its simplicity, gentleness, and effectiveness.

Herbal Medicine

The best results when drugs and surgeries have failed, when Western doctors have given up, is found in Natural ways of Healing; in the cyclical patterns of Creation and medicinal plants and nutrients that man cannot assemble; a tapestry only God and Nature can design.

Even though, there are specific Organic Supplementation protocols and Herbal Medicine formulas for multiple health conditions, every person is a different world and his/her needs should be addressed individually after the Comprehensive Examination and Diagnostic Evaluation have been performed.

After 2 to 3 months of Oriental Medicine care (Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and Organic Supplementation) at Health & Hope Institute, and in many cases earlier than that; most patients need to discuss a "Prescription Drug Weaning Program" with their prescribing Western doctor. Patients may be sufficiently better with the Oriental Medicine approach and be over-medicated by that time, and the actual prescribed drug/ medication can become their biggest problem.

Patients have the right to learn as much as possible about their conditions and their prescribed medications, and are responsible for maintaining effective communication with their Western doctors regarding their progress, therapeutic choices and concerns.

We will support our patients in their healing journey and respect their personal choices and efforts to recover control over their own health and well-being, however; At Health & Hope Institute, we cannot make any recommendations about specific dosages, substitutions and/or withdrawal of any Western Medications.

We are all exposed to thousands of toxins and chemicals on a daily basis at work, in the home, through the air we breathe, our food and water supply, and through the use of pharmaceutical drugs. In addition, we are eating more sugar and processed foods than ever before in human history and regularly abuse our bodies with various stimulants and sedatives.

If you never wondered or cared much about the pollution around us, it's time to change your views and start paying attention to this problem. For decades, scientists have been studying the pollutants in our air, water, food, and soil. U.S. industries manufacture over 6 trillion pounds of 9,000 different chemicals a year. They dump billions of pounds of industrial chemicals into our air and water year after year. So now scientists have started to examine pollution levels in humans and their findings are deeply disturbing.

"Death Begins In The Colon"

"Of all the polite topics of conversation, the state of one's intestines is probably at the bottom of most people's lists. Let's face it: Irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, gas, diverticulitis and colon cancer are simply not things we like to discuss. And yet, as the old expression goes, death begins in the colon. Don't believe it? Ask any coroner. Autopsies often reveal colons that are plugged up to 80 percent with waste material." - Vegetarian Times, March, 1998.

Research clearly proves that our bodies are not capable of eliminating all the different toxins and chemicals we inhale and ingest every day. They simply accumulate in our cells (especially fat cells), tissues, blood, organs (such as the colon, liver and brain) and remain stored for an indefinite length of time causing all kinds of health problems. I can't show you a picture of what this pollution build-up looks like in the brain or the liver, but we can see how it looks like in the colon.

All the toxins and 'dead' processed foods lead to poor digestion causing a toxic build-up in the body, including the colon. This toxic waste material in the colon then frequently turns into - in the words of National Geographic - "A sinister world of monstrous creatures that feed on living flesh: parasites".

You shower, brush your teeth and wash your hair on a regular basis, but do you clean yourself inside? In this modern, toxic world it's becoming a simple fact of life that our colon (the ‘sewer system' of the body), liver and other organs also require regular cleaning. Just like a car requires an oil change periodically.

If you are OVERWEIGHT, TIRED, or feeling OLD and UNMOTIVATED, you may be TOXIC! These symptoms are often the result of accumulated toxins and metabolic waste products that cannot be flushed out of the body.

Health & Hope Institute offers several Cleansing, Detox and Weight Management programs including Blood tests (Blood Print) to determine which types of food cause Inflammation, Fat Accumulation, Fluid retention, and Toxic Allergies in your body ; Acupuncture to manage stress and the comfort found in overindulgence, as well, strengthening of the Digestive, Defensive, Elimination and Detoxifying Functions of the body; Nutritional Therapeutics and Dietary consultations and support throughout the entire process. Additional benefits of cleansing are individual, but can include: improved skin, flat stomach, mental clarity, improved mood, and reduced food cravings. Additionally some patients have reported relief from: sinus problems, cellulite, headaches, constipation, and pre-menstrual problems.

If you experience one or more of the following, then it is time to detoxify:
  • Frequent fatigue and low energy
  • Flatulence, gas & bloating
  • Excess weight
  • Food allergies
  • Impaired digestion
  • Irritability, mood swings
  • Bad breath & foul-smelling stools
  • Parasites in stool
  • Frequent colds

  • Protruding belly ("pooch")
  • Powerful food cravings

Quick fixes usually do not work, and if they do work, it will be at the body’s health expense, generating disease and distress. The best option is to be flexible with our lifestyle and make intelligent choices, eat a sensible diet and practice regular physical activity.

In order to succeed in your quest to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight and improve your self-esteem and well-being, consider the following personal advice:
  • Take some time to be Grateful for the Food and Nutrition you receive.
  • Make a conscious effort to Breathe deeply and slowly throughout the day.
  • Drink plenty of purified water throughout the day in order to be hydrated, assist your body's detoxification and maintain certain level of satisfaction in your stomach.
  • Make sure all your fundamental dietary needs (aminoacids, essential fatty acids, complex vitamins, trace minerals …) are met, to prevent unnecessary cravings.
  • Learn to know your Hunger and Eat only If You are Hungry.
  • Avoid Mindless Eating (like eating leftovers from your children's plates, tasting food while cooking it, watching TV or reading while eating, chewing and swallowing quickly...).
  • If you really need a snack, carry healthy ones with you (veggies, fruits, nuts and seeds, protein bars...).
  • Stop eating before you feel full or completely satisfied, even if you have not finished with the food in your plate (it takes some time for the brain to process and register the perception of having received enough food to fulfill our metabolic needs).
  • Teach your body to be comfortable with smaller food portions and Chew your food many times very slowly to break down the nutrients, so your body has a better chance to assimilate them.
  • Avoid high fructose-sugar/carbonated/caffeinated drinks. Pure Water is the best fluid and the only one our body needs.
  • Avoid all types of quick food and junk food. Also avoid microwavable, canned and frozen foods that are devitalized and have almost lost all their nutrients.

Nutritional Therapeutics

Your body needs a perfect balance of vitamins, minerals and nutrients to enable it to perform at its best.

Living in today's chemically cluttered world robs us of a lot of these vital ingredients and after years of our bodies trying to adapt to these deficiencies, as well as eating manufactured and processed foods, symptoms such as fatigue, skin complaints, digestive problems, allergies, aches and pains can become all too common.

By taking professional advice on the right things to eat you can take the first step to being in control of your health.

Conditions that would benefit from Nutritional Therapy:
  • Digestive disorders, such as candida and Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Skin complaints such as eczema and acne
  • Food intolerances
  • Sleeping problems
  • Stress, fatigue and depression
  • Hyperactivity and Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)
  • Sports performance
  • Autoimmune Diseases, Arthritis and Rheumatism
  • Weight control
  • Endocrine disorders (such as Thyroid disease, Hypoadrenia, ...)
  • Diabetes
  • Cancer support
  • PMS and the menopause
  • Thrush
  • Osteoporosis
  • Pre-Conception care
  • Fertility and pregnancy
  • HIV/Aids and other Recurrent Viral Infections support

In fact, almost everyone can benefit from Nutritional Therapy. For example:
  • People receiving conventional medical treatment can enjoy the complementary benefits of an improved diet.
  • Anyone feeling a bit 'run down', 'below par' or 'not 100%'
  • Healthy people seeking improved or continued good health, or requiring advice on supplementation.
  • Sports people, dancers and others with specific physical requirements.
  • People with specific demands on them, such as women planning pregnancy, starting the menopause or with problematic menstruation.

  • Computarized Trans-Dermal Scanning

Upon arrival, you will receive a nutrition/hormone deficiency questionnaire and a full “Computarized Trans-Dermal Scan” that will assist in detection of nutritional deficiencies; patterns of disease; interference patterns in vertebral column and teeth; stressed, blocked or deficient organs, and food allergies.

You will then be taken through a full and detailed consultation that will cover your specific needs and symptoms, and, from this, together with the information gleaned from your questionnaire, consultation and scan; we will develop your own Personal Nutrition Program to help you towards optimal health. The program will be designed to suit your nutritional needs, lifestyle and tastes, encouraging you to ‘achieve’ rather than fail.

Depending on your complaint, we may also recommend that you have some tests (for example for food intolerances, blood print) that will be sent away for analysis.

Follow-up consultations are necessary in order to plan recommended goals in achievable stages, review your progress, and to update your program as your health improves.
